Full story below.

I never thought I’d set up a furniture making business. With a background in medical engineering and a CV which spent most of its time helping tech businesses grow, it’s fair to say the career shift caught most people by surprise.

But I wanted to create something that combined what’s most important to me: genuine environmental impact; creating tangible things that I could be proud of; and (more selfishly) building an active, varied, challenging existence, largely away from a screen…

And why furniture making? I’ve taken huge satisfaction from building things out of wood since day dot. And I’ve always thought it was the coolest-thing-in-the-world that our dining table growing up was made out of the old Swanage pier, where I grew up. But the real genesis stems back to making a 13ft scaffolding board banquet table for my girlfriend as a Christmas present in the middle of the pandemic (how romantic, eh?).

The touch paper was lit, and millions of social media rabbit holes later, so Sephton was born. Est 2024.

With little design experience and zero e-commerce knowledge I have put together my first collection of tables (name?) made solely out of pallets and scaffolding boards, with the aim of creating something robust and beautiful out of the type of waste wood you’re most likely to see sticking out of a skip.

My design ethos is simple: applying classic joinery to modern waste to create sustainable, beautiful furniture made to last. Turning joints into a design feature, I’ve tried to embrace the inherent imperfections of reclaimed wood - like the bolt holes and rust stains from the old Swanage pier - and show it off in a completely new light.

From here, the goal is to find increasingly innovative and ambitious ways of creating sustainable furniture, in terms of material sourcing, design, and manufacture. We’re excited to see what collections two and beyond hold in store.
